In 1891, a prominent New York physician believed he had found a cure for nearsightedness. Instead of prescribing eyeglasses, he advocated the use of eye exercises and taught patients how to do them. That man was Dr. William Horatio Bates and his flawed system is still being used today.

Bates was different from other quacks because he had respectable credentials. He graduated from Cornell University in 1881 and from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1885. Over time, however, he developed wild ideas about vision that he popularized in his book "The Cure of Imperfect Eyesight by Treatment without Glasses" published in 1920.

"The book attracted large numbers of charlatans, quacks, and gullible followers who then published scores of unscientific books and articles of their own on the subject of vision. Extolling the Bates System, these authors urged readers to 'throw away' their glasses. Some of these writers even established schools," wrote Drs. Russell S. Worrall and Jacob Nevyas in "The Health Robbers."

Although Bates acknowledged that eyeglasses made seeing and reading possible, he claimed they didn't cure vision defects and may ruin a person's eyes in the long run.

Doctors say vision problems are usually caused by the improper bending of light rays by the lens of the eye. The lens normally changes shape to bend light at an angle that will strike the retina and bring objects into focus.

Once the lens loses this ability, refractive errors occur. In nearsightedness, for instance, light rays that enter the eye fall short of the retina, causing the patient to see nearby objects only. In farsightedness, the opposite happens. Light rays go beyond the retina, putting far objects in focus.

However, Bates ignored these facts and pursued his own peculiar notions. He claimed that the lens never changes shape and that eye defects are caused by stress or a "wrong thought" that can tighten eye muscles. To relieve tension and improve vision, he invented a series of eye exercises that he claimed could cure nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, cataracts, and glaucoma.

He advised patients to cover their eyes with the palms of their hands, to look at different objects continually instead of staring at one thing, and to read under difficult conditions such as in dim light. He also told people to stare directly at the sun to benefit from its warmth.

Eye exercises, of course, have their proper place in medicine. In "The Well-Informed Patient's Guide to Cataract and Other Eye Surgery", Dr. Mark Speaker of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and Karyn Fieden said these might help those with strabismus or cross-eyes. Dr. Peter Gott writing in "Better Health & Diet" published by the World Almanac, said exercises may be useful if poor vision is caused by a weakness or imbalance of the eye muscles.

But in most cases, the problem is due to abnormalities of the eye itself. This is common in eye disorders like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Stop at coffee shop and read the paper; joyously greeting each person. Eat a healthy, balanced, nutritious breakfast while connecting with my wife. Drink three glasses of filtered water as a treat.

2. Answer all e-mail. Write my column; infused with wit and insight. Send materials to three potential speaking opportunities, confident they'll hire me for twice asking price. Complete assignments for all clients prior to promised deadlines.

3. Reconcile credit card statements, set up automatic banking to pay each and every bill for next three years. Buy groceries. Straighten office.

4. Have lunch with a friend. Sit in the sun on a swing, singing. Watch entertaining, uplifting video. Have a wine cooler. Relax. Count blessings.

Today (actual):

1. Got up late after throwing alarm with annoying buzzer at wall. Dragged my panting, sweaty, dreary, flabby body around the block for 10 minutes. Gagged down chalky instant breakfast while watching exercise infomercial. Waved to wife as she went to work. Decided extra caffeinated coffee is a "need," not a "want."

2. Spent 45 minutes sifting through email about sexual potency, mortgages, and African expatriates offering me money. Stared at blank page while occasionally pounding head on desk to alleviate writer's block. (Took several aspirin.) Made one phone call where I was relegated to "voice mail hell" for 24 minutes. Cursed at automated voice. Slammed down phone; breaking mouthpiece.

3. Shoved bills from one messy pile to another. Decided to scrape green fuzz off last week's leftovers for dinner. Came to terms with the fact that my office will always look like it was designed by tornado.

4. Had three-hour chocolate binge fest; felt guilty (and fat) so I blamed my wife for having snacks in the house. (Learned new definition to "unwise decision.") Weather was cloudy so I zoned out with two martinis in front of TV while watching imbecilic sitcoms (which, in my mood, actually seemed appealing). Fell into restless sleep on couch, with face in drool stain on pillow.

Someone said happy simply accept life on its own terms. As my Yiddish grandmother Zlate said (in addition to countless repetitions of "Oy Vay"), "Mann plant Gott lach;" translated, "Man plans, God laughs."

I must remember it's not about getting it done. It's about how I feel about what was done. It's not how far I have to travel, it's how far I have come.

Today: not so good. I was frustrated. But tomorrow, I try again. That's excellent.

Shadows cascade against the walls of an alley. Two men are standing in the center. One hands over the cash, the other a pack of powder. Thus the sale of poison is completed, and another life dwindles down the drain of the steaming city.

Governments throughout the world condone these transactions and have declared a war on drugs. They have sentenced many kingpins and dealers to the pen and kept them there till their expiration date. This may sound like the plot of a best selling science fiction novel but it is happening all around us, from vending machines to supermarket shelves. Refined sugar is poison. The side effects of sugar include, but are not limited to a weakened immune system, tooth decay, poor behavior and cognition in children, increased stress, depression, deplenishment of important bodily nutrients, diabetes, chromium deficiency, and even cancer.

U.S. food manufacturers are aware of these complications, but are more interested in churning a profit than consumer health. As a consequence, they search for the cheapest manufacturing techniques and apply them. They have found pumping high fructose corn syrup and other sweeteners into the food we eat cuts the cost of production. In turn, they zap it into foods not associated with sugar content.

The average American consumes corn as high fructose corn syrup more than any other form, according to the ABC 60 Minutes documentary "The Food Industry is Deceiving You". The documentary also stated, according to the department of agriculture if American's were to apply to a well balanced diet, nearly twice the acres of fruits and vegetables would have to be grown.

In fact, according to the documentary, the majority of the new food products that flood the market each year are packaged and are junk food. The majority of these products contain sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, fructose or other sweeteners. "Fats and sugars get 3 times as many subsidies and fruits and vegetables."

The FDA often does not burst onto the scene unless there is a huge public backlash. As a matter of fact, it has shown a continual lax of enforcement on food companies for years. This has been apparent in the recent salmonella peanut butter outbreak. " Nutritionists nickname for the FDA is the Fraud and Death Administration." Susan Zimmer, Osteopathic Physician and Holistic Medicine Specialist said. The FDA has even been known to accept bribes from these companies if they will overlook them.

According the 2002 U.S. Census Bureau, the average American's consumes 45 teaspoons of sugar a day. " That adds up to a whopping 675 empty calories," Dr. Gott the Author of the column "Ask Dr. Gott," said. This opposes the nutritionist recommended 2 teaspoons a day. It is no wonder we have seen a dramatic increase in childhood obesity and learning disabilities in recent years. According to the 2002 U.S. Census bureau survey 65% of American are either overweight or obese. If something isn't done soon being thin and healthy will be an abnormality.

Thirty years ago our children snacked of cheese, crackers, fruits, and vegetables. Today's children gorge themselves on candy bars, soda pop, potato, chips, and gummy snacks. These foods are not only unhealthy; they verge on being dangerous. According to How the Food Industry is Deceiving you, you have to peddle your bike an hour to burn off the calories in a liter of soda and six hours to burn of the calories in a McDonalds value meal. "We have really changed the nature of what we call a snack," said Barry Popkin, professor of nutrition UNC at Chapel Hill.

High sugar foods are bad for you because the body digests them too quickly. " The bottom line is the faster your body digests your food the sooner you will be hungry again and the more you will eat in the long run," Dr. Gott said. He said when you eat sugar a rush of glucose rushes into you body the moment it is consumed. " When blood is flooded with sugar and glucose this way you experience a temporary sugar "High" caused by a spike in your blood sugar level," Gott said. " A short time after later, as the glucose leaves your system just as quickly as it entered it, you experience a "crash" which leaves you feeling fatigued and hungry as your body craves more fuel."

The best foods to eat are complex sugars and fibers because the body digests them slowly, as a consequence you don't feel hungry as often.

Sugar is addictive, almost as addictive as cocaine. It is no wonder why so many people in this country cheat when they attempt to apply a low calorie diet. Often these addicts malnourished, due to sugar's replacement of the minerals in their body. This is often the case with Chocoholics. " Besides sugar, a chocoholics unknowingly also crave the magnesium in Chocolate." Zimmer said. She said that her job as a nutritionist is to help the patient find healthy ways of restoring chemical balance to their body.

According to Zimmer, there are things that people can use as alternative to sugar. "When I make apple pie I use bananas to sweeten it," She advised buying plain yogurt and mixing the fruit in yourself, because name brand yogurt companies pack sugar into flavored yogurt products. This goes to show that one can live healthy while partaking in some of life's sweetness, there are also many benefits to be had in avoiding sweets.

"If you do not indulge in sweets, sugars and processed foods, especially from and early age, you can eliminate any and all tooth decay" Dr Mercola, Osteopathic Physician, St. Alexius Medical Center, Hoffman Estates, IL said. "There are many cultures throughout the world who avoid sugar and as a consequence are nearly cavity free."

There's a lot of people who claim to know the "latest" muscle-building strategies. I'm not talking about steroids; if you want to have a crazy temper, watch your testicles shrink and kidneys stop functioning, hey, knock yourself out! Seriously, you just need a real and safe muscle building diet. My friend is doing that now. His problem hasn't really been the need to lose weight; what he wants is lean muscle. The question is: what is a decent muscle building diet?

When it comes to a worthy muscle building diet, you should always remember that what you put in your body is crucial. It's tough with a Micky D's on every corner, I know. The key to weight loss is simply to burn more calories than you take in. In the simplest of terms, then, my No Flour, No Sugar Diet works because eliminating flour and added sugar from your diet, without making other changes, reduces the number of calories you consume. I have found, and my patients' successes have verified, that eliminating flour and sugar from your diet is a simple way to cut calories instantly. Replacing high-calorie breads, for instance, with low-calorie vegetables and legumes will take a big chunk out of your caloric intake without leaving you feeling hungry or unsatisfied. Likewise, by replacing sugar and honey with no-calorie sweeteners, you can feed your sweet tooth while cutting calories.

To see how eliminating flour and sugar from your diet can dramatically reduce the number of calories you consume, let's compare the caloric content of two breakfasts -- one with flour and sugar and one without. If you normally start your day with a bagel (about 250 calories) spread with a pat of butter (50 calories) and a tablespoon of strawberry jam (50 calories), and coffee with two teaspoons of sugar (30 calories), you're eating about 380 calories. Simply switching to old-fashioned oatmeal (100 calories) with one cup of skim milk (90 calories), a medium apple (80 calories), and coffee with artificial sweetener (0 calories), will save you 110 calories. You will also have reduced your fat intake from 7.5 grams to 2 grams, increased your fiber from 1 gram to 7 grams, and added 400 milligrams of calcium. And that's just breakfast.

As the above comparison clearly shows, eliminating flour and sugar from your diet is a simple way to rid your meals of many unnecessary calories. As an added bonus, you may find you'll automatically reduce the amount of fat you eat. Without bread and jelly, for instance, what fun is high-fat peanut butter? No flour means no cheesy pizza, no pasta in cream sauce, and no buttery cookies. Eliminating sugar means no more fat-laden ice cream or cake with buttercream frosting.

One pound of fat is equivalent to 3,500 calories. In order to lose one pound in a week, you need to consume 500 fewer calories a day or burn 500 more a day -- or in a perfect world, a little of each. If you could make dietary changes such as those mentioned in the breakfast example above, cutting 110 calories from every meal you eat, you'd easily be more than half way there.

Avoid products containing any kind of flour, including wheat, rice, and corn flours, or refined or concentrated sugars (cane sugar, beet sugar, glucose, sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, maple syrup, honey, molasses, etc.). Whole grains and starchy vegetables, such as wheat berries, barley, brown rice, corn, and potatoes can add bulk to your meals. Satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit and products sweetened with fruit -- as long as they don't contain added sugar. You can also enjoy sugar-free soda, chewing gum, and even many of the light ice creams now available that are sweetened with Splenda or other artificial sweeteners. Snack on raw vegetables and fresh fruit -- excellent low-calorie sources of important nutrients and fiber.

Cutting the unnecessary, or "empty," calories of flour-based, sugary foods from your diet is a simple and relatively painless way to move toward your goal. Add an extra half hour of physical activity a day -- a brisk walk, a game of tennis, or a spin on the treadmill -- and you can expect easily to lose a pound a week until you reach your desired weight.

Slow and steady wins the race

While calorie reduction is the key to losing weight, it is important to remember that calories are our bodies' fuel. They provide the energy we need to perform normal daily activities. While consuming more calories than our bodies require leads to weight gain, it is important -- even while you're trying to shed unwanted pounds -- to eat enough calories to get the nutrients and energy your body requires to function optimally. That is why diet and health experts generally agree that the most effective diets are those on which you lose no more than one to two pounds per week.

To facilitate fast and dramatic weight loss, many fad diets require you to decrease your caloric intake to levels that are inadequate to insure you're getting the nutrients you need. Furthermore, weight that is lost quickly is very likely to come back just as fast when you stop starving your body. A slow, steady approach will maintain your health while producing the results you desire -- and you're more likely to keep the weight off over time. You'll have a bad week here and there, but don't be discouraged. It happens to the best of us. Even if you don't meet your one-pound goal in a given week, stick with the diet and the weight loss will average out over time.

A diet for (just about) everyone

Dr Peter Gott recently answered a reader's question about bee pollen and hot flashes. He also provided some basic information that all pre-menopausal women need. Here's a look at what he had to say.

One reader wrote that this supplement (also known as bee-bread and ambrosia) relieved her hot flashes completely at a dosage of 550mg twice per day. The doctor recommended a dosage of 500mg three times a day.

The only problem with that recommendation is that high doses of the supplement can cause allergic reactions in people with pollen-allergies. In a very small number of cases, the reactions have been serious enough to require medical attention.

The better supplement manufacturers recommend that anyone who might be allergic should start with a small does, around 270-275mg per day. That's less than the doctor's recommendation concerning bee pollen and hot flashes. So, it might not be effective.

Hot flashes are primarily a menopausal symptom, but they do occur for some other reasons. The symptom is caused by the brain's signaling system. For whatever reason, it cannot determine if your body is hot or cold. So, it tries to make adjustments. The heat warms the body up excessively. The heat is typically followed by a cold chill as the brain tries to cool the body back down.

According to Dr Gott, the flashes deplete the body's stores of several essential nutrients, including magnesium, potassium, vitamin C and the B vitamins. It is interesting that supplements containing those nutrients can help prevent the flashes. So, it may be something of a vicious cycle. Low nutrient levels trigger the symptom and the symptoms drive the nutrient levels lower.

If you were comparing bee pollen and hot flashes treatments of other kinds, you would want to look at the nutritional value. Not all manufacturers evaluate the nutritional value of the granules.

You should also compare the form in which the supplement is provided. While the granules are most common, the most effective supplement is one that has been combined with enzymes in order to ensure the nutrients are released.
